About Us

The Institute of Travel & Tourism was set up to raise and maintain professional standards throughout the travel industry and for the benefit of its Members.

Membership of ITT is open to everyone involved in travel and tourism – whether employed by a travel agency, airline, tour operator, hotel, tourist office, car hire company or any other travel related business such as PR, law and marketing.

The Institute also welcomes travel and tourism educators and their students.

ITT provides Members with support and guidance at the same time as encouraging excellence and professionalism.

There are also many opportunities for Members to network and exchange views with industry peers and colleagues created through ITT's popular social and business events.

Phil Gardner, Head of Commerical Sales & Relations, Thomas Cook

Phil has spent his entire career in tour operating and now holds the position of Head of Commercial, Sales & Relations at Thomas Cook, a role which bridges the tour operator with all distribution channels internally and externally. This includes responsibility for all trade business including agents and suppliers, cruise, ancillaries, sales and merchandising and commercial insight. In the time since Phil joined in 2015 the business has undergone significant change and in particular has transformed the way in which it works with the trade, re-engaging across all levels and developing new business.

Phil first joined the industry just 1 week after 9/11 in 2001 with an induction onto the First Choice Holidays graduate scheme. From there he spent several years in the product and yield functions before taking a role in Business Improvement, serving as an internal consultant across a number of divisions within the business aimed at cost saving and revenue generation. Phil was heavily involved in the merger between First Choice and Thomson in 2007 and led the integration of the Ireland business for the newly formed enterprise, programme-managing 15 change projects.

Then came a move to the newly named TUI where Phil led the Flight Only business, transitioning Thomsonfly into the wider package arena to improve profit. In 2011 Phil then took on a new role as General Manager at Thomson Cruises where he led all commercial aspects of the business including planning and fleet development, product, yield, purchasing and onboard revenue, all contributing to a significant turnaround in profit and customer experience for the cruise line.

In September 2015 Phil then moved to Thomas Cook and is based at the head office in Peterborough with regular time also spent at the London office. Phil has fast become a well-known figure in the travel industry trade and is characterised by his combination of commercial nous with a strong sense of humour!
